The 5 R's

A biblical framework for the moment temptation hits — not a formula for defeating sin, but a way to turn to Christ again and again.

This is not a formula for defeating sin — it is a framework for turning to Christ. The power is not in these five steps. The power is in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit working in you. These steps simply help you respond biblically when temptation comes.

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Philippians 2:13 (NLT)

Isaac Santos

Before You Begin

This is not a formula for defeating sin — it is a framework for turning to Christ. The power is not in these five steps. The power is in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit working in you. These steps simply help you respond biblically when temptation comes.

1

Recognize

Call the temptation what it is.

Don't justify it. Don't entertain it. Don't negotiate with it.

Simply acknowledge: I am being tempted.

Say this in the moment:

I am being tempted.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)

2

Run

Break the momentum immediately.

This is the turning point.

Leave the room. Close the app. Put the phone away. Drive somewhere else. Get around other people.

Don't try to outlast temptation. Remove yourself from it.

Do this immediately:

I will not stay here and negotiate. I am removing myself from this temptation right now.

Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace.

2 Timothy 2:22 (NLT)

Run from sexual sin!

1 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT)

3

Resurrender

Submit your will to God.

Be completely honest with the Father. Temptation often reveals what your flesh wants — bring that honesty into prayer and choose God.

Pray this in the moment:

Father, my flesh wants this, but I want You more. I surrender my will to You. Give me strength to obey You right now.

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7 (NLT)

4

Replace

Replace temptation with obedience.

Don't leave a vacuum. Take the next righteous action.

Read Scripture. Pray. Call a trusted brother or sister in Christ. Go for a walk. Exercise. Serve someone. Return to the work God has given you.

Choose your next righteous action:

  • I will open Scripture and fix my mind on what is true.
  • I will pray and ask God for strength right now.
  • I will call a trusted brother or sister in Christ.
  • I will move my body — walk, exercise, or change rooms.
  • I will serve someone or return to the work God has given me.

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.

Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

5

Repeat

Obey the next decision. Then the next one.

Don't focus on never being tempted again. Focus on obeying God right now.

If temptation returns five minutes later, start again.

Recognize. Run. Resurrender. Replace. As many times as necessary.

Remember:

I don't have to win the whole war in one moment. I will obey God in this decision — then the next one.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.

Galatians 5:16 (NLT)

The Foundation

Your confidence is not in your discipline.

Your confidence is not in this framework.

Your confidence is in Christ.

Because of Jesus, sin is no longer your master. You are not fighting for a new identity — you are living from the new identity He has already given you.

Sin is no longer your master... Instead, you live under the freedom of God's grace.

Romans 6:14 (NLT)

Count yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God through Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:11 (NLT)

The 5 R's

  • RecognizeCall the temptation what it is.
  • RunBreak the momentum immediately.
  • ResurrenderSubmit your will to God.
  • ReplaceTake the next righteous action.
  • RepeatKeep choosing obedience, one decision at a time.

Remember: The goal is not to trust the framework. The goal is to let the framework continually lead you back to Christ, who alone gives the desire and the power to overcome sin.

When temptation hits, do this immediately

  1. 1Recognize: call the temptation what it is. Don't justify, entertain, or negotiate.
  2. 2Run: break the momentum. Leave the room, close the app, put the phone away, get around people.
  3. 3Resurrender: submit your will to God. Be honest — ask Him for strength to obey right now.
  4. 4Replace: take the next righteous action. Scripture, prayer, a trusted call, a walk, service.
  5. 5Repeat: if temptation returns, start again. Obey the next decision. Then the next one.

Your challenge

Before your next hard day, familiar trigger, or coaching call, commit to running the 5 R's one time — not perfectly, honestly, in real time. Let every step lead you back to Christ.

  • What temptation or pattern will you target first?
  • What does Run look like for you in that moment (room, phone, app, place)?
  • What Resurrender prayer will you pray in your own words?
  • Which Replace action will you take next — Scripture, prayer, a call, a walk?
  • Who can you tell that you are practicing this? (Accountability changes everything.)

Work through it, write it out

Fill this in honestly. Print it, journal it, or bring it to your free coaching call.

Be specific — what keeps pulling you back?
Time of day, place, emotion, situation…
I am being tempted…
Leave the room, close the app, put the phone away…
Father, my flesh wants this, but I want You more…
What I will do next, and the verse I will hold onto…
What worked? What was hard? What will you do differently next time?

Your confidence is in Christ.

Run the 5 R's — Recognize, Run, Resurrender, Replace, Repeat — and let every step lead you back to Jesus.
